The pillars of any wardrobe should be strong basics. If you have a good set of well fitting, good quality basics then you give yourself so many more options. It allows you to get dressed without having to think too hard, and gives you the opportunity to be more creative in putting together new combinations. You can mix in trends or stick to your timeless classics, the possibilities are endless - some days I set aside some time just to have fun trying new things out! In this post I'm sharing a few of my favourite staples.
Striped tops are my number one - they work with almost anything and are always chic. Friends or family who come anywhere near my wardrobe ridicule the number of striped things I own but really, I think you can never have too many. Find a good fit in a nice fabric - this one only cost a few pounds from H&M but is a really soft linen blend so hangs really nicely. And don't listen to that silly myth about horizontal stripes making you look wider - nonsense!!
The khaki shirt is another favourite of mine. I like khaki as it brings out the green in my eyes, and adds a bit of colour without being too 'in your face'. It works equally well in summer - this one actually doubles up as my poolside cover up! It's viscose which is a huge bonus as it never looks creased, ironing is really not my favourite pastime. But any loose fitting shirt works really - you can throw it over another top as I've done here, tuck it in, pop it under a jumper, whatever - it will always add a bit of cool.
Skinny jeans are obviously an essential, but in particular Topshop skinny jeans are my personal favourite. If you can afford to spend more than £40 on jeans then I'm sure there are other great options, but for me the fit is second to none. No baggy knees, they cling a little but not too much and are super flattering. Whenever I stray and try anything else I am instantly reminded of how uncomfortable skinny jeans can be, and how awkward they can be to wriggle in to. The fabric of the Topshop ones is somehow different as they literally glide on and will stretch to your heart's content - many sessions of popcorn-and-chocolate-fuelled box-set binge watching have put this to the test!
Putting together an outfit like this makes it really easy to put your own spin on it with a few accessories. These studded boots are a copy of Chloe's Susanna style - if money were no object I would have them in every colour - and are a nice way of adding a bit of an edge. I added some aviators and one of my favourite necklaces, a little rose gold heart on a silver chain.
When I consider people who's style inspires me most (Erin Wasson, Lucy Williams, the Olsens, Emanuelle Alt, Jules Sarinana) I notice they tend to put together a combination of the above, with a little twist to make it their own. It's quite a French style of dressing really - not too much fuss, but chic and timeless.
What are your style staples? If you need some inspiration then I recommend getting yourself a Pinterest account and pinning every outfit you wish you were wearing and look for any patterns in what works best for you.
