Montmartre is known as the arty bit of Paris, and while there are still plenty of kooky musicians, graffiti artists and painters hanging around I'd say they were outnumbered by tourists some time ago... It's also home to the rather lovely Sacré-Coeur, a basilica with the best view in Paris (I always think it beats the view from the Eiffel Tower as you can still see the Eiffel Tower).
Anyway, it's a great area to wander the streets admiring the alternative artworks and find a nice café, if not for the coffee then just to enjoy the atmosphere. We decided to skip the funicular and climb (despite our sore legs from the many many steps we had climbed in the days prior) as really part of the loveliness of this experience is in walking up the steps themselves.
