Every January we are hit with the same old stuff - 'new year, fresh start' is a perfectly nice idea, but it usually translates into hollow commitments to magicking ourselves perfect overnight while we're sold even more stuff which is 'essential' to help us stick to our unattainable New Years' resolutions. Don't get me wrong I think it's a natural time to get back into healthier eating and drinking habits after all the festivities of December, but in setting ourselves silly standards that we can never hope to sustain, nearly everyone ends up going back to their old ways before January is out.
So this year, I'm hoping to try a slightly less extreme approach. I've started by writing down some of the things I might like to achieve in 2015. I've also looked at what I did right in 2014 that has helped me to get on the right path, and what I could have done better. Rather than hoping to get there too quickly, I'm going to try and make a small change every couple of weeks or so, for example learn a new yoga sequence and practice it more often, try to cut back a little on how much chocolate I eat. Eventually these small changes will become new habits, which are then just part of my normal life. I think we could all do with being a bit kinder to ourselves and taking small but definite steps towards what we want for ourselves.
What may make us happy in the short term doesn't always translate to our long term goals, so while it is easier said than done, it really is worth the effort. In 2014, I had to use serious willpower to be able to save for my travels. Anyone who has lived in London will know how difficult this can be, and yes it was hard at the time, having to turn things down and change my spending habits, but it has been so worth it. This experience has helped me feel more in control of my life and has inspired me to go after things with even more determination in 2015.
While I think we could all afford to improve certain aspects of ourselves, we should also recognise the things we are already happy with. In a society that constantly strives for more, I'm taking today to appreciate the things I already have. Which is partly where the inspiration for this outfit came from. Practically everything I'm wearing has been in my wardrobe for a long time, and while I definitely am still guilty of lusting after new clothes in the sales/whenever I'm online, sometimes just going through my own things can inspire me too.
So rather than waiting to be a new person in 2015, maybe lets just try and be the best version of the people we already are.
