Geneva

Geneva proclaims itself to be 'the smallest of big cities' and I have to say this is a pretty accurate description. It is the home of several important institutions and is a major centre for finance and international organisations, but the city has a population of less than 200,000 people and is pleasantly compact. Although I spent a long time in London, I heard more languages spoken here in just five days in Geneva.

We stayed with a very welcoming Genevan named Dodly who, having lived in several cities all over the world, cited his main reasons for returning here as the  slower pace of life and the peaceful integration of practically every race imaginable.

Given its manageable size, Tommy and I were able to explore the entire city centre on foot and get to know its web of cute alleyways and affluent streets in a few short days. Although you do have to watch your spending, Geneva is a charming place and we fell in love with it on the course of our leisurely walks.

In these pictures, you can see the iconic Jet d'eau, an immense feature that has been a tourist attraction in Geneva for decades. It's around 140 metres high and it's pure white burst is a pleasant contrast to the crystal clear blue waters of the lake.

In December unfortunately the mist prevented us from seeing the mountains across the lake, but the air was pleasantly crisp. I had to layer several jumpers here - this blue Primark beauty is oversized enough to fit another couple underneath - and of course my cashmere scarf to protect against any gusts of wind.
